Conclusion

In this chapter, we looked at the various ways champion teachers present or frame material to create mileposts—points in a lesson that have the effect of either increasing or decreasing the perception of speed within a classroom. Skillful pacing—together with high academic expectations, a strong plan of attack, and a stable and sturdy lesson structure—makes for a productive classroom experience and enables the creation of a rigorous academic ethos.

Ultimately, one of the many goals of teaching is to encourage and support students in the act of thinking for themselves. In Part Three, we'll look at a variety of ways champion teachers work to shift the balance of classroom work from themselves to their students.
